in the studio
I've recently moved into a wonderful new studio at the bottom of the South Downs just outside Brighton. From my door I can walk through the cricket ground and up onto the hills. The light is wonderful too. Windows surround the space on two sides with views into a garden filled with Mulberry, Fig and Camellia. Such an increase in space has transformed how I paint.
I mostly work with oil paint and oil stick as I enjoy the richness, texture and deep colours of oil especially when mixed with linseed or walnut oil. If I walk up onto the Downs to sketch, I pack watercolour pad, pencils, pen, pastels, chalks, watercolours and gouache. All of these works on paper inform my larger paintings back in the studio.

My studio is home to my art books, paints, brushes, plants and cuttings that I pick on my walks. The walls are covered with imagery that has meaning to me - my observational sketches, postcards, photographs of landscapes I love - often taken whilst walking with my three sons.
