I thought it would be interesting to give you a glimpse of my painting studio by the sea in Brighton and Hove. I'm an oil painter. Sometimes I use other media - watercolours, gouache, Indian ink or a mixture of mediums. But for my canvases I mostly paint with oil. I now can afford to buy ready made stretched canvases by Belle Arti or Jacksons.
From a very young age at school I began painting with oil paints- mimicking and therefore learning the techniques of masters - Lucian Freud, Georgia O Keefe, Frank Auerbach.
My oil painting palette is a constant building of layers and it's become a part of my practice. Without it I feel strange. Alone - without a focal point to my brushes. It's a space between brush strokes where I can pause and think whilst I mix a new colour or squeeze out a last dot of a tube or pour my linseed oil into swirls.
I've tried neatening up my palette system, using neat pots and ordered lines of paint tubes. But it doesn't last long. And that's okay!
