I recently visited one of my paintings in it's new Brighton home. This oil on canvas was inspired by the trees in the valley near a stretch of the River Exe in North Somerset - a place I have known since childhood.

I wanted to explore the relationship between the light, the dark, the sensations and the sounds which I experience when walking through the woods here.

It rains a lot on Exmoor and in summer the greens are intense against the hue of wild flowers and bracken.

The painting is an abstracted and impressionistic landscape - a natural way of painting for me - allowing me to convey feeling and emotion. Made in 2024 toward the end of summer.
